Niek van Dijk is full Professor in Orthopaedics and head of the Orthopaedic Department of the AMC-hospital (Academic Medical Centre Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam) and is specialized in surgery of the ankle and knee, sport traumatology and arthroscopic surgery. He is founder and director of the Orthopaedic Research Centre Amsterdam.

Recent and current board activities concern: President ESSKA (European Society for Sport traumatology, Knee surgery and Arthroscopy):

2010-2012 President ESSKA-AFAS (Ankle and Foot Association) since 2008 Board Member ISAKOS (International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine): 2007-2011 and currently vice-chair of the strategic planning committee.

President NOF (Nordic Orthopaedic Federation): 2008-2010 Medical Committee World Squash Federation, since 1996 Among other positions he was President of the Dutch Orthopaedic Association, President of the Dutch Arthroscopy Association, Chairman of the Arthroscopy Committee of the ESSKA and ISAKOS.

He is a member of several editorial boards and he is honorary member of several international associations like the Deutschprachige Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Arthroskopie (AGA), the

Greek Arthroscopy Association (HAA), the Czech Society for Sports Traumatology and Arthroscopy (SSTA), the Groupe de Chirurgie Mini-invasive du Pied et de la Cheville

(GRECMIP), the Association of Sports Traumatology Arthroscopy Orthopaedic Surgery Rehabilitation (ASTAOR in Russia) and the Slovak Society of Arthroscopy and Sport Traumatology (SSAST).

He is also a corresponding member of the Chilean Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology and of the Colombian Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology.

The research lines of Niek van Dijk focuses on ankle and hind foot pathology, arthroscopy and sports traumatology. The title of his thesis is ‘On diagnostic strategies in patients with severe ankle sprain’ (March 24th 1994).

Concerning long term results several aspects are under research, such as prevention of residual ankle complaints. Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies on chronic ankle injuries have been the focus of research. New minimal invasive operative techniques were developed for treatment of chronic articular and peri-articular ankle pathology. In collaboration with the

Technical University in Delft, new instruments are developed and current operative techniques are under research. International collaboration has been instutionalized with

Harvard University Boston, MA, USA (Prof. dr. J. Jupiter and Dr. D. Ring), Duke University, Durham, NC, USA (Prof. dr. J. Nunley), Kantonsspital Liestal University of Basel, Switserland (Prof. dr. B. Hintermann), the University of Pittsburgh, KS, USA (Prof. dr. S.LY.

Woo, Prof. dr. F.H. Fu), the University of Barcelona, Spain (Prof. Dr. P. Golanó) and the Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai, India (Prof. dr. S. Arumugam). In all of these collaborations PhD students are involved in the research projects.

Niek van Dijk published over 250 scientific indexed publications and 100 chapters and presents on average 25 international invited lectures a year. Overall, current research projects involve 27 PhD students.

TRAYECTORIA PROFESIONAL

Con 30 años de trayectoria, su carrera profesional siempre ha estado vinculada a la cirugía de la mano, campo con el que entró en contacto durante su formación como residente y que perfeccionó durante sus estancias internacionales en París (Francia) y en Buenos Aires (Argentina).

CIRUGÍA

Tras dirigir la Unidad de Cirugía de la Mano del Hospital Gregorio Marañón durante 12 años, actualmente desarrolla su labor en el ámbito privado.

INVESTIGACIÓN Y PUBLICACIÓN

La investigación y actualización constantes en su campo de actuación son su seña de identidad. Ha sido pionero en el desarrollo de la artroscopia de muñeca, de hecho, organizó el primer curso nacional referente a esta técnica en A Coruña, en 1992, formación que, a día de hoy, continúa impartiendo.

Cuenta con más de 80 publicaciones en revistas científicas y más de 120 comunicaciones y ponencias presentadas a diferentes congresos nacionales e internacionales.

Firme defensor de la súperespecialización dentro de su área, afirma que para un profesional es fundamental “hacer lo que sabe hacer, para hacerlo bien”.
